A lot of activity doesn't always turn into a lot of results. It's tempting to jump into things quickly that sound promising and then jump out of them quickly if your cash flow is being drained. Marketing is a long-term play. Sales needs to have a process. There is a gap between the two that has to be designed and managed.
Most advertising and organic marketing takes time to optimize before you can dial in what is working. Sometimes an ad campaign won't work for a type of business no matter how much money you spend. For other businesses, there is no point to posting a lot on social media. It depends on the business, the target market, what the playing field is like, and how the business is set up. That's why I spend time learning about a business and what their situation is before I make a recommendation.
The best way to stand out from competitors is by being yourself. Your business brand is a reflection of who you are. I think it starts with understanding who your best customer is, what is important to them, and understanding why they will make the buying decision they do. Every business appeals to their right customers. Brand messaging, customer experience, and company morale need to reflect your goals as the business owner and why you started the business.
Customer behavior has changed significantly in the last few years. As technology has given people more tools and access to information, buyers aren't interacting with businesses the way they used to. People are finding a lot of answers for what they need without ever contacting a business. When someone does call for pricing or a quote, they are usually just verifying some things and getting numbers from a few businesses to make their final decision. With YouTube and AI, people can learn to do a lot of things themselves.
Another factor is how customer priorities can change because of everything going on in their lives. A customer may know they need to do something but with all the demands on their time and money, they may decide to hold off if what they're looking at isn't fulfilling an immediate need. Purchases that have deadlines, emergency repairs, or medical issues can change someone's priorities quickly. I've noticed that sales cycles can be longer than they used to be for non-priority items. With that understanding in mind, long-term marketing strategies are important for setting up a business for success.
There are a number of things a business should be doing online to get more local clients. Setting up and optimizing a free Google Business page will help get maps placement in Google search results when someone is looking for a service provider in your area. Having a website that identifies your location and the areas your business serves also will help potential customers find your business online. Picking a social media platform you like and doing interesting posts geared to your local market will help people know more about you. Joining local Facebook groups and engaging with people in those groups will help make your business known.
Get out in your community and be involved. Join a local networking group that meets at a time that is convenient for you. Join your local Chamber of Commerce. Many of them will do ribbon cuttings and host events you can go to and meet other business owners. Participate in school activities if you have kids. Sponsor events that are affordable. Volunteer in some way if there is an organization that is dear to your heart. People need connection and like to belong. When you are part of a group, you can build relationships and those relationships will bring business over time. When you invest in people and your community, you'll become a person that people count on.
